I’m truly delighted to announce the release of ‘Beyond the Stars’, the concert I gave on two nights at @expo2020dubai. This version is a compilation of the two performances, mixed and mastered for optimal quality.

My vision for this event was to express in sound the ways we come to know, to appreciate, and to love one another. Many highly skilled artists of diverse backgrounds joined me in a free-flowing musical dialogue.

‘Ya Rasul Allah (Part 1)’ is available now. It’s a brand new arrangement of a beautiful traditional Kurdish song of love for the Prophet and longing to go to Medina. I’ve added lyrics in Arabic and Turkish here to the original Kurdish. The magic that can only happen in a live performance comes through perfectly in this video as the melody is carried seamlessly between the instruments and vocalists. Huge thanks to the musicians and technical team for bringing this vision to life. SY

‘Live at the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music’ is now available worldwide. With new compositions – ‘Ilahana’, ‘Madad’, and ‘Mawlana’ – and brand new arrangements of existing pieces, this album delivers my most authentically traditional and sophisticated performance to date. Early in my career I disliked live performances due to the element of pop celebrity status that came with them. Now as I’ve turned to traditional music, I’ve come to value and love live concerts because the intimacy with an audience and the improvisational aspect between musicians brings everyone fully into a shared moment of artistic creation and reception.

The concert in Fes and this subsequent album have been an opportunity to honour the legacy of artistic traditions of Andalusia, the Middle East, and Turkey. I want to thank the incredibly talented musicians who accompanied me and the crew in Fes, without whom none of this could have come about, and my own team who worked tirelessly to make this album a reality. Thanks also go to the @fesfestival organisers who invited me to perform there for the second time, the first time being 2009. I hope you’ll enjoy these pieces and have a feeling of being there on that starry night in Morocco. With love. SY

The refined, sophisticated compositions immerse the listener in the rich musical language of traditions from Morocco, Andalusia, Turkey, and across the Arabic-speaking world. This 16-track album features brilliant performances by an international ensemble of master instrumentalists along with a renowned Moroccan vocal group all under the direction of the composer. These are new compositions as well as completely new arrangements of previously released works.

2019, the year of this live recording, was Sami’s second time headlining the prestigious Fes Festival; the first time was 2009, joining the ranks of earlier headliners such as Ravi Shankar, Paco de Lucia, Youssou N’Dour, Joan Baez, Björk, and Ben Harper. The musician’s special love for this land is evident in the works heard here, and this album delivers all the magic of the live performance that held the Fes audience spellbound.
