Maruthu Pandiyars were staunch Sanatanis and extraordinary warriors who have fought the East India Company valiantly. After taking over the Sivaganga Kingdom, they have brought about 108 temples under its control and did a lot of renovations to them.
Maruthu Pandiyar brothers gave their lives to save a temple called Kalayar Kovil. The warriors surrendered when the British threatened to blow the temple with cannons.
