The Cape starling has an adult length of about 10 inches and weight of about 3.5 oz. The Cape starling is found in the southern part of Africa. Its range encompasses the extreme south of Gabon, the west and south of Angola, the extreme south of Zambia, the southern half of Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho and South Africa.

Insieme al Gufo reale e al Gufo comune è uno dei tre gufi più conosciuti sulla terra. Lungo sui 37 cm, pesa tra i 200g e i 500g.

La specie è diffusa in Europa (dalla Scandinavia alle coste del Mar Mediterraneo), Africa settentrionale, Asia (dalla Russia all'India e l'Indocina), nel Canada, negli USA, in tutto il Sud America centro-occidentale, nelle Hawaii, nei Caraibi e nelle Isole Galapagos.

The short-eared owl occurs on all continents except Antarctica and Australia; thus it has one of the most widespread distributions of any bird. A. flammeus breeds in Europe, Asia, North and South America, the Caribbean, Hawaii and the Galápagos Islands.
