The devastating floods in Pakistan highlight how Pakistan is at the epicenter of the climate justice crisis. More than 1,000 people have been reported killed and 1,500 injured by massive floods in the northern city of Nowshera.
The floods have been exacerbated by extreme weather and the melting of Pakistan’s 7,532 glaciers due to global warming. Pakistan has more glaciers than anywhere in the world outside the polar regions.
The recent death-toll shows the terrible price Global South countries like Pakistan are forced to pay for the extractivism and carbon-emissions of industries headquartered in the Global North. While Pakistan contributes just 0.67% of all global carbon emissions, the US accounts for 11%.
